Introduction: A Forbidden Practice
Exodus 20:4–5: “You shall not make for yourself a carved image… You shall not bow down to them or serve them.”
This is not just a suggestion — it is a command. Idolatry is abhorrent to God.
The First Sin: Replacing God
Idolatry began when people exchanged the glory of God for images (Romans 1:23). It is spiritual adultery (Jeremiah 3:6–8).
God is spirit (John 4:24) — He cannot be captured in wood, stone, or metal.
God’s Judgment on Idolatry
1 Kings 14:22–24: Judah fell because they made “high places, pillars, and Asherah poles… and there was a cult prostitute in the land.”
Hosea 4:12: “My people inquire of a piece of wood, and their staff gives them answers.”
God hates it.
Jesus and the Law
Some say, “Jesus fulfilled the law, so we can do what we want.” But Jesus said: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets… until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota will pass” (Matthew 5:17–18).
The command against idols still stands.
